People hear the job numbers -- 800 at Dow Kokam and 1,200 at Dow Solar Solutions -- but when will the companies start hiring?

Dow Kokam expects its major hiring process to begin next year, while Dow Solar Solutions does not have a timeframe set. David Dupre, Michigan Operations site leader, said the positions will include "brand new jobs" and that Dow is serious about job creation.

Dow Kokam expects to employ up to 800 people in its two phases when full production is under way. Hiring could begin in late 2011, with the hopes of having phase one operational in 2012, according to Kristina Schnepf, Dow Kokam director of branding and public affairs. Phase two of Dow Kokam's facility could see construction begin in 2011, with hiring after that point.

Dow Solar Solutions expects to create 1,200 jobs that will be new to the region by 2014. The hiring process for the shingle production facility has not yet begun. Updates will be posted at www.dowsolar.com as they become available.

Dow officials have chosen a site in Midland for the shingle facility and initial plans are being developed, Dow Solar Solutions Manager Jane Palmieri said. She said the location will be announced at a future time.
